James H. Groves Adult High School

Diploma Program

Marshallton Education Center

The James H. Groves Adult High School is a state approved secondary school.  Its purpose is to provide Delaware adults and out-of-school youth with an opportunity to complete a high school education and earn a regular State of Delaware High School Diploma.

In June 1964, the Delaware Legislature established and funded the High School Extension program.  It also authorized the State Board of Education to begin an Adult High School program with centers in each of the counties.  The school was named in honor of James H. Groves, the first superintendent of public instruction in Delaware.

Each center is staffed with administrative, instructional, and support personnel.  All Groves teachers hold a regular Delaware teaching certificate in the subject he/she teaches.

The Groves Adult High School holds accreditation by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.

Statement of Philosophy

The James H. Groves Adult High School provides the opportunity for its students to learn in accordance with their abilities, interests, and aspirations within the framework of standards prescribed by the State Board of Education.  Therefore the faculty and staff believe:

  • Curriculum reflects the needs of the adult learners and enhances the individuals’ opportunities for employment and lifelong learning.
  • Students, staff, and administration interaction enhances the quality of the educational program.
  • Productivity increases as self-esteem increases.
  • Student goals must be addressed in the instructional setting.

Registration:

All persons interested in enrolling in any of our Adult Education Division programs must first complete the TABE assessment (Test of Adult Basic Education).  Students scoring between the 5th and 9th grade level will be served through the Adult Basic Education program.  Persons who score at or above the 9th grade level will be scheduled into the appropriate academic course, regardless of their enrollment status as either an In-School Alternative, James H. Groves, or MAP student.  Unfortunately, we are unable to assist individuals who score below the 5th grade level on the assessment.  Those scoring in this range will be directed to the appropriate agency for assistance.
