New Green Building Courses
Apprenticeship students are now receiving instruction in topics related to Green Building. We are hoping to be able to offer courses to the journey level worker in this emerging field. As a result, we have put together some short courses to target specific areas. Tuition for each of the Green Building Courses is $10 per contact hour. The minimum number of students required to run any of the courses below is eight (8). All textbooks and instructional materials are included in the cost of the course. Course completers will receive a certificate and be eligible for appropriate CEUs.

Your Role in the Green Environment
15 hour course; $150.00
Course # G-01 (Location TBD)
This module explains the environmental impact of the built environment and identifies ways in which construction pro-fessionals can mitigate this impact responsibly and effectively. It contains exercises on calculating your carbon footprint and worksheets on inventorying household and product impacts. It also introduces the LEED Green Building Rating System. This course has been approved by the USGBC as a 15-hour course that can be taken to maintain LEED Credentials under the Green Building Certification Institute.
Introduction to the Power Industry
10 hour course; $100.00
Course # G-02 (Location TBD)
This module sets the stage for trainees entering the electrical energy production and distribution field. It describes the many ways in which electricity can be produced, from burning fossil fuels such as coal and natural gas, to harnessing nuclear energy, and using renewable energy sources such as wind, geothermal, and solar energy. This module explains energy distribution and transmission and briefly explores the economics involved in energy production and delivery. Finally, the module describes the environmental impacts of producing and distributing electrical power, as well as the methods that are employed to mitigate those impacts.
Introduction to Solar Photovoltaics
40 hour course; $400.00
Course # G-03 (Location TBD)
This introductory module was created for those individuals wanting to attain a basic knowledge and application of solar photovoltaic system operations. This stand alone module is based on the ten objectives contained in the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners.
Introduction to Wind Energy
15 hour course; $150.00
Course # G-04 (Location TBD)
This standalone module will provide basic information on wind energy and wind power technology. This module defines how wind generates power, discusses the two types of wind turbines (horizontal and vertical-axis), and covers the advantages and disadvantages of wind generated electricity.
Introduction to Weatherization
15 hour course; $150.00
Course # G-05 (Location TBD)
This module introduces the trainee to the weatherization initiative and its underlying motivation by examining the eco-nomic and environmental effects of the inefficient use of energy in heating and cooling buildings. This module describes the common ways in which heat is lost and how cold air infiltrates a house. It introduces remediation methods such as air sealing and insulation as a lead-in to subsequent modules. The module also explores career opportunities in the weatherization industry.
Sustainable Construction Supervisor
15 hour course; $150.00
Course # G-06 (Location TBD)
Today the green building market is estimated to be worth $30 billion annually, and approximately 10% of commercial construction starts are projected to be Green. With 20,000 LEED projects registered for certification, sustainability in the building industry is becoming less the fad, and more the norm. This module will instruct construction managers on sustainable construction management, the LEED rating system as it would apply to oversight of their projects and crews, and how to supervise and train their subcontractors and crews so that LEED points aren’t unintentionally sacrificed.
